Sauna for Fitness? – Benefits

One of the things that we notice after a gym session is the lack of people in the sauna room. Whenever we finish working out, we always go for a sauna session and surprisingly, there are few people in there with us.

This got me thinking, why aren’t there more gym goers using the sauna? There are a lot of benefits that you can get from a sauna especially if you want to stay fit and healthy.

Improved Circulation

When you are inside the sauna, you will sweat because of the high temperature. Your heart rate will rise and your blood circulation will be stimulated. An improved blood circulation helps bring nutrients and oxygen to different areas of the body and they will benefit from it.

Recover Faster

After working out, your muscles will be sore because they are stretched to the limit and it will require some time for them to heal so that you can continue with your workouts. When you use a sauna, the healing process is hastened. One reason is the improved blood circulation which gives the muscles the nutrients and oxygen required for them to heal faster.

Relaxation

After an intense workout or even a light one, relaxation is necessary and when you use the sauna, you will be able to relax and get rid of stress. Stress hormones are regulated, allowing you to have a stress free relaxation.

Lose Weight

Yes, one of the reasons a lot of people go the gym is to lose weight and it boggles the mind when we see them just walk past the sauna room before or after working out. Saunas are very effective when it comes to losing weight as it allows you to burn around 500-600 calories during a 30 minute session. Of course, it shouldn’t be your only course of action when you want to lose weight but it certainly helps and it should be part of your weight loss program.

Detoxification

We are exposed to heavy metals, toxins and chemicals everyday and one of the more effective ways to get rid of them is through sweating because the pores open up and they are pushed out. These toxins should not be allowed to build up inside our body and we should do what we can to help the body get rid of them. Sweating is a good way and one of the best ways to do that aside from working out is regularly going in the sauna.

Skin Care

Improving the skin as you age is one of the benefits of regular sauna use. Signs of aging are unavoidable but you can do something about it to make your skin look younger and healthier. Collagen and elastin production is promoted when you use the sauna regularly because of improved blood circulation. Furthermore, dead skin cells are removed and they are replaced by new skin and this results in a healthier and glowing skin.
